X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF)

X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) is a very useful analytical technique. X-rays generated from a target and directed onto a solid or liquid causes a quantum disturbance in the electron shells of the atoms. The re-fluoresced X-ray from the sample are diffracted by a crystal, much like a grating in optical emission spectroscopy. The X-rays, now qualified by wavelength, can be impinged upon detectors which will quantify the amount of re-fluoresced X-rays. The XRF at WAL is generally used to determine elemental characteristics of fly ash, coal ash, cements, metals, oils, rock analysis, and many other type of samples.

The instrument at WAL is a Philips AXS, wavelength dispersive, computerized XRF. It major usage is to determine elemental constituents above 10 ppm to matrix levels of concentrations. The XRF will quantitate concentration levels to better than plus or minus 5 percent of the amount present, provided appropriate standards are available. The WAL instruments are also used to provide a "quick" qualitative estimation of elemental constituents in the form of an XRF elemental scan.
