Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)

GC/MS (Gas chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) uses gas chromatography as a separation tool to obtain pure compounds. The effluent from the GC is directed into a mass spectrometer which ionizes and fragments the organic molecule to a easily recognizable mass spectra which can be interpreted by people or computers to determine the original compound form. This analytical technique is used frequently to determine organic contamination of drinking water, waste water, other environmental samples in a wide variety of matrices (sample types). The GC/MS capability is available from our Laramie, Wyoming laboratory.
